SAN ANGELO –Gary Gabriel, John Henry Perez, Trey Allen and Jacob Padilla, were all awarded prestigious awards: Coach of the Year, Male Athlete of the Year for local area and region, and Regional Director of the Year from the Texas Amateur Athletics Federation. The TAAF awards took place at Tuesday morning's, October 16th City Council meeting held in the McNease Convention Center.
Perez, the San Angelo Parks and Recreation Supervisor, prior to his being awarded the Regional Director of the Year award, handed out plaques, one each to Trey and Jacob.
“Trey Allen was nominated for the local Athlete of the Year for the City of San Angelo Recreation Department.” Trey participated in youth flag football and youth flag basketball this past year,” said Perez.

Jacob Padilla was nominated for the Regional Athlete of the Year in Region 10; Padilla has participated in youth flag football and youth flag basketball since he was four-years-old.
“I want to thank God for blessing me in this moment, my parents, my coaches and my teammates,” Jacob said afterward. “I think he’s got a bright future in sports.” “He does well in all sports, but I want him to be the best in basketball,” said proud mom, Donna Padilla.

The TAAF Coach of the Year recipient was Mr. Gary Gabriel who has not missed one day of practice for the past 14 years. Coach Gabriel, a youth track coach for the City of San Angelo, starts coaching after Memorial Day and finishes up in July with the Summer Texas Games.


The final recipient, Perez, was presented the award by Danny Zincke, Texas Amateur Athletics Federation President/ Director Parks and Recreation for the City of Boerne.
“On behalf of TAAF, I would like to present to the San Angelo Parks and Recreation Department with the Gold Member City Award for 2017-2018,” Zincke said.
