SAN ANGELO –A father recently came in to the San Angelo Salvation Army and told a representative that when he was growing up, the only Christmas he had was because of the Salvation Army. That father is now teaching his children to give back. “What the children are now doing is making it possible for another little boy, another little girl to have a Merry Christmas themselves” said Salvation Army Major, Stan Carr. “It is so heartwarming to see that kind of response.”

The San Angelo Salvation Army board members, currently comprised of seven, met for their monthly board meeting on Thursday, December 13, 2018 during the lunch hour.

At last week’s Salvation Army board meeting, Major Carr told that story to Flaco Guapo Media. The Major has been touched by the community’s involvement with the Christmas Angel Tree Program.
“San Angeloans have been good about not just being involved in the San Angelo Salvation Army’s Angel Tree but returning with the tags of what children want.” The people have been so generous.” “My wife and I have been doing this for 32 years that Debbie said to me the other night ‘I wish I could be in the homes of some of these families to see their reaction to these great gifts,’” said Major Carr. “That tells me how generous the people of San Angelo are, we are so grateful.”
Even though the Major and his wife have only been here five months he concluded, “this is a community that wants to take care of each other.”

Left-to-right: U.S. Marine Corporal, Tiffany Nowicki and Lance Corporal, Jean Werner. Nowicki is from Buffalo, New York and has been in the Marines for two years; Werner just completed one year. Both marines did their volunteer service for the San Angelo Salvation Army for two hours on Saturday, December 8, 2018. God bless you both for serving our country and our community!

On the flipside of another program, Janet Sheen, SA Community Development Relations Coordinator, gave an update report on the Salvation Army Kettle Bell Ringer.
As of December 18th, The Salvation Army has reached 63% of the needed goal. “While we are appreciative of all who have supported us, we encourage everyone to help us fill the gap, so that we can continue to serve those most in need in our community” stated Sheen.

The Salvation Army is scheduled to have their annual, Angel Tree distribution day. “We will be distributing the Christmas gifts to families on Wednesday December 19, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. then from 1:00 p.m.- 2:00 pm at the old Salvation Army warehouse, located at 215 Gillis Street," stated Sheen.
