SAN ANGELO – Mr. Peyton LaBauve, a graduate of Angelo State University, a national student of the year and former ASU president of the student government association, when introduced by San Angelo Republican Vice President of Programs, Kellye Duncan, his impressive credentials gave him enough weight to outline for his attendees one particular area he was very well versed in to address—student loan debt.

Mr. LaBauve, who obtained his Masters’ in Healthcare Administration from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, pointed out in his power point presentation that a millennial generation is investing less, marrying later, having less children. Many factors contributed to this. The biggest thing in Labauve’s opinion was “debt, particularly student loan debt.”

Student loan borrowers now graduate with an average of $37,172 in student loan debt. “That’s about the same as a 20% down payment on a $185,000 home. 20% percent of those who borrowed money will default. “And that default is worth $20 billion dollars every single year.”

Peyton followed by saying that only the Democrats and Progressives are addressing this particular issue. “We need to start discussing some of these things because these are the issues our young people face.”

In his concluding remarks, LaBauve stated that this issue and others cannot be looked upon as partisan, meaning Republican issues or Democratic issues. “It’s the solutions that are partisan.” “These are American issues and the solutions are how we treat that problem.”
