SAN ANGELO —Angelo Catholic School’s Joel Chavez competed in the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico - San Antonio (UNAM) Annual Calavera Writing Contest last September 2020. Chavez came in second place. He received his award from Mrs. Gracie Gonzales, ACS principal.

Angelo Catholic School’s eighth-grade student, Joel Chavez not only competed in a writing contest but came in second place—against, college students.



Joel and seven of his fellow classmates attended last September 2020, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) Annual Calavera Writing Contest which was held in San Antonio, Texas.

Joel’s teacher, Mrs. Irais Colin accompanied her students who participated in the Contest. The poem Chavez wrote was in conjunction with celebrating Los Dia De Los Muertos. ACS’s 8th-grade students learned about Mexican culture and traditions surrounding, All Soul’s Day.

Besides Joel’s award, Mr. Daniel Vasquez, 5th Grade ELA teacher was given honorable mention.
