SAN ANGELO –The English word, curriculum, is the Latin word “currere.”. It "refers to education as the running of a course…” In Dr. Carl Dethloff’s brief opening remarks, he stated that this past year the 24 teachers who were recognized on stage ran their curriculum race. "This is a great event to celebrate what is right with public education and that's the classroom teachers."

At Wednesday afternoon’s April 24th San Angelo Independent School District’ teacher of The Year Ceremony, as family, friends and colleagues looked on, 25 San Angelo ISD teachers were recognized for their outstanding leadership and excellence in teaching the children of San Angelo at the 2019 Teacher of the Year Ceremony.

Nominees from each campus were introduced and presented a framed certificate. Following the presentation of campus honorees, the district Secondary and Elementary Teachers of the Year were announced. Kevin McSpadden from Central High School was named Secondary Teacher of the Year and Stacy Fischer from Bowie Elementary School was named Elementary Teacher of the Year. Afterward Stacy made a brief comment. "Anything that I can do for my colleagues or students, I am there for them."

The two district winners were each presented with an engraved award provided by Concho Educators Federal Credit Union. SAISD would like to thank Credit Union President Jerry Merrill and Vice President/CFO Kathy Gonzales for their support of this event.

A panel of judges reviewed applicants nominated from each campus and chose the district winners. The winners were kept a secret until they were announced at the ceremony. The two district winners will now compete for the Region 15 Teacher of the Year.

Among the 25 teachers there was Yvonne Busenlehner who stated that she was "ecstatic, happy and blessed," to have been awarded a certificate. Mrs. Busenlehner , a 2012 Angelo State University graduate has taught English to 7th through 12 grade students at Carver. "I'm the biggest cheerleader for anyone that is around me because I believe in everyone being successful," concluded Yvonne.

"I can't put it into words how honored I am to serve the families of Fort Concho." The teachers attempt to make it a great day and a great place to attend” said Rene Gonzalez, who has been a Fort Concho Elementary music teacher since 2008.
