SAN ANGELO– Finally, “all-girl troops will be able to earn the same merit badges and accomplish the same advancements that boys have earned for nearly 109 years in the Boy Scout program!”

That statement from a Recognition certificate was read by San Angelo Mayor, Brenda Gunter, at the City Council’s Tuesday meeting on March 5, 2019. It certainly had historical significance for one, first all-female Scout BSA Troop, 374 and their Scoutmaster, Jenni Price-Fierro.

BSA Troop 374 is comprised of eight Girl Scouts, four of which were at Tuesday morning's City Council. They are: Madison Schwab, Rebekah Jacobson, Kaydance Lunsford and Bethany Acuavera [not in order] And, Scoutmaster, Jennifer Price-Fierro.

Scout BSA officials besides, Price-Fierro at the far left, are: Ruben Acuavera, Margaret Schwab, Donnie Lunsford, Casey Jacobson and Devin Koehler, scout executive.

Two Recognition certificates were handed out. The first one went to Troop 374, represented by four female members and Price-Fierro. One of the Girl Scouts, Rebekah Jacobson, stated that while both scouts have the same badges, the difference is, “Girl Scouts, you have to clean a car.” “Boy Scouts need to repair one” said Jacobson, to which the audience all laughed at her innocent response.
“I joined Scouts along with all these young girls so I could learn to do stuff like Rebekah said, other than clean a car” said Kaydance Lunsford, humorously.” “I think it would be nice to do the stuff that boys do. . .like repair cars, build rocket ships, program computers.”

The Recognition certificate read, “This marks the first time in history that young women can begin the journey toward the prestigious Eagle Scout rank.” For Scoutmaster, Price-Fierro, who has a son and daughter in the Scouts program it took on a deeper meaning. Because now Boys Scouts and Girls Scouts came under one umbrella of just simply, Scouts. “I have been in scouting, Boys Scouts since 2012. “It is historic for us (her) because now I have not only a son in Boy Scouts but I have a daughter in BSA.” Price-Fierro’s son is William Price, a chaplain for BSA Troop 374; the daughter is Julie Anna Price.

The second Recognition certificate was given to MHMR Services for the Concho Valley. “The month of March 2019 has been designated as Developmental Disabilities Month in order to celebrate and recognize people with disabilities. I, Brenda Gunter, Mayor of the City of San Angelo, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim the month of March 2019 as “DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILTIES AWARENESS MONTH”

Accepting the certificate was Executive Director, Gregg Rowe, who was accompanied by MHMR’s Concho Valley Bobcats team which won a tournament two weeks ago in Abilene for Special Olympics. Rowe proudly stated that MHMR’s team has triumphed over many other teams; and its Cheer squad has won multiple spirit awards.
“Thank you for your support for our team and our services” concluded Rowe.
